For dogs living in a shelter, October is not just like any other. In an effort to make a difference in the lives of shelter dogs around the country, October was made National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. The goal? To find loving, forever homes for man’s best friend!
Why You Should Adopt
You might save a life.
Unfortunately, animal shelters can only safely hold so many dogs at once. If a dog is not adopted within a certain period of time, they’ll likely be transferred to a new shelter or put down. When you adopt, you give a pooch a second lease on life.
It costs less money.
In fact, it might even be free! On average, adopting can cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousands of dollars less than buying a dog. Plus, the money you do spend on adoption tends to go right back into the facility and is used to buy food, toys, and amenities for the pooches still living there.
It hurts the puppy mill business.
When you buy a dog from a pet store or online seller, you’re more likely than not getting a dog that was bred in a puppy mill. The only way to shut down puppy mills for good is for people to stop buying from them altogether. Each time you adopt, you’re keeping money out of the hands of puppy mill owners.
To better know the animal you’re getting.
One of the main reasons people purchase dogs is because they want a specific breed. While many breeds do share certain character traits, there’s no guarantee that the golden lab you buy will have the same wonderful personality as the golden lab your friend has. Because the median age of shelter dogs is 18 months, their personality is more established. After visiting your friend a few times, you’ll get a better understanding of their personality and be able to choose a dog that’s best for your personality and situation.
Can’t adopt? There are plenty of other ways you can get involved in Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! Shelters are always looking for food, blanket, and toy donations.
